Seconds – Prints
Handmade prints are naturally going to have some imperfections. Small variations are expected, that’s part of the charm of this art form. However, sometimes more obvious imperfections happen, resulting in a print I’m not comfortable selling at full price.
Instead, I offer these prints as “seconds”. The backs are signed with “seconds” beside the date to indicate that it is not the typical quality of the print. You need to look closely and/or be familiar with the original print to notice the imperfections, so they still look great displayed. It’s a great way to add art to your collection without spending as much money.
Some examples of imperfections:
- Shadow of logo visible on the front
- I stamp my logo on the back of prints, and if I use too much ink it sometimes bleeds through a bit and is visible if you look closely.
- Incomplete lines
- Not enough ink in some places or not enough burnishing can cause some lines to not transfer to the paper.
- White space filled in
- Ink sometimes gets trapped in small details, filling in spaces that should be white.
- Fuzzy spots
- This usually happens with the ink pads I use for my eraser stamps. If it’s too wet in places, the paper absorbs the excess ink and some spots get a bit distorted.
- Double print
- This happens if the paper or stamp is lifted and put down again in a slightly different position, or if a softer material like erasers or speedy carve is pressed too hard.
